Does Remedial Massage Need to Hurt to Be Effective?
One of the most common questions we hear at Muscleworx Myotherapy & Massage is, “Does remedial massage have to hurt to work?”
The short answer is no.
Many people associate remedial massage with deep pressure and believe that the more painful a treatment is, the better the results will be. While remedial massage often targets tight muscles, trigger points, and areas of restriction, excessive pain is not necessary for effective treatment.
A skilled therapist aims to work within your comfort level. Sometimes a tight muscle or trigger point may feel tender during treatment, often described as a “good hurt,” but you should always feel comfortable communicating with your therapist if the pressure becomes too intense.
In fact, applying too much pressure can sometimes cause muscles to tighten and guard, making treatment less effective. The goal is to encourage the muscle to relax and release, not to create unnecessary discomfort.
Every client is different. Factors such as injury history, pain tolerance, activity levels, and overall health all influence the treatment approach. Some people respond best to deeper techniques, while others achieve excellent results with a gentler approach.
After treatment, some clients feel immediate relief while others may experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours. This can be a normal response as the body adapts to the changes made during treatment.
The most important thing to remember is that remedial massage is about achieving results, not enduring pain. A good treatment should leave you feeling better, moving more freely, and heading towards your goals.
